Monica Duncan: Clarinet, Chamber Music

Clarinetist Monica Duncan freelances throughout the Greater Boston area, and has performed with Symphony by the Sea, Cape Ann, Lexington, and Greater Lansing Symphonies, North Shore Music Theater, Hillyer Festival Orchestra, Chalumeau Chamber Ensemble, Bay State Clarinet Quartet, and Arlington Street Chamber Players. Duncan has performed in Japan and Canada, and has premiered works at the SCI National Conference and the Latin American Music Festival. She can also be heard on the CDs Awaiting the Sun, FleetingVisions, Metamorphosis, and Ghosts through Beauport Classical, and Basically British with Philharmonia a Vént.

Duncan holds a Master of Music degree from Indiana University where she studied with James Campbell, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Michigan State University. In addition to her role as performer, Duncan teaches clarinet from her private studio and in the Hamilton-Wenham School District. She is also a chamber music coach with the Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra.

David Schumacher: Saxophone, Composition, Jazz

Composer and saxophonist David Schumacher began his schooling with Branford Marsalis and Andrew Speight at Michigan State University where he completed a BM in Composition/Theory in 1997. Following that he spent two years studying composition with Bob Brookmeyer at the New England Conservatory of Music earning a MM in Jazz Studies-Composition with Distinction in Performance. Along the way Schumacher has also studied with jazz greats George Russell, Jerry Bergonzi, Rodney Whitaker, and Marcus Belgrave.

David has contributed to DownBeat Magazine, been a member of the BMI Jazz Composers' Workshop led by Jim McNeely and Mike Abene, and is currently co-leader of Sound Assembly in New York City. Sound Assembly is a 17-piece collective of New York's finest players featuring the original compositions of Schumacher and co-leader JC Sanford.

Their latest CD Edge of the Mind was released in 2009 to rave reviews from major publications including JazzTimes, All About Jazz, iTunes, and CDBaby where they are an Editor’s Pick for jazz and one of the Top Ten Jazz Albums for 2009.

In addition to his projects in NYC, David is the Director of Jazz for Pentucket Regional High School and has performed with artists including Bob Brookmeyer, Branford Marsalis, Frank Carlberg, and the Bob Brookmeyer Composer’s Big Band. His compositions have been commissioned by schools and performers including New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, Michigan State University, Oswego State University, LeMoyne College, Chalumeau Chamber Ensemble, Joshua Thomas, Joe Lulloff, Dead Cat Bounce, Triocracy, Andrew Speight, and several high schools across the country.

His works have been performed at or in the Kennedy Center, North American Saxophone Alliance conference, Montreux-Detroit, Notre Dame, Lansing, and Plattsburgh State Jazz Festivals, Michigan State Jazz Spectacular and Premiere’s Concert Series, Wharton Center Great Hall, and in Jordan Hall for New England Conservatory of Music Commencement and New Music Series.
